Injuries...

My knee popped pretty badly at training last night, so I guess I will actually have time to do the blogging things that I said I would. There is a ton of theory stuff that I've wanted to write about for a while anyway, so hopefully I really follow through with it.

stay tuned

Spending time developing what matters (work your basics!)

Where are you spending your time? You see it everywhere. The guy who taps out all the other white belts with his favorite techniques that he just got out of tapout magazine. Throwin' down gogos without even learning how to properly finish the omoplata in the first place. Within a few months (sometimes weeks), his peers soon catch up, then surpass, his once "endless" ability. Why does this happen? In the beginning, most grapplers are focused on learning more techniques, hopefully finding one that there peers don't know yet, so they can catch them off guard. This works for a little while, until they run out of new techniques, while there peers have been drilling what they're learning in class.

BASICS

How do we define them? What are these secret techniques that vanquish all who oppose you? How do I find them? Well, they're behind the jade monkey in the hall of...nevermind. Truth is, you've probably already learned them, but do you KNOW them? How are your grip breaks? How good is your shrimp? Cross choke? Could we really be talking about techniques this simple to perform? Well, if your answers to the above questions weren't at least "pretty good", then you may have to ask yourself "How good am I?".

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

I think as you work up the ranks, one very important thing changes about every grappler. They shift the focus from learning more techniques, to perfecting the ones they know. Now perfecting the techniques you already know is not a short-term task. How they work, why they work, what stops it from working, what stops them stopping it from working, etc. You could go on assessing every technique this way until it's perfect. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't spend time working certain "advanced" techniques. But everything builds off of the techniques you learn as a white belt. What's the difference between a purple belt and a black belt? As you progress, you'll start to see that it's not about moves, it's about movement. Every move is a movement, and every movement can be drilled over and over ad nauseam. Black belts are better at movements, which, in turn, makes them better at moves. I don't know a purple belt who can't identify nearly every technique they saw in the mundials this year. Try going to training and dedicating to use a specific submission from every position possible. Try focusing on only sweeping from your back, and as soon as this is accomplished, pull guard and start over. Time spent developing things that you know you'll use even once you're a black belt is time well spent. Where are you spending your time?
